Heloise
d'Argenteuil pernah dikenal sebagai perempuan paling berpendidikan di Eropa
pada masanya. Lebih luar biasanya lagi, ia mencapai pendidikan tingginya saat
usianya belum mencapai 20 tahun. Ia berasal dari Prancis lahir pada tahun 1098.
Di balik kecemerlangan Heloise di bidang akademik, ada kisah
tentang hubungan gelapnya dengan pria bernama Peter Abelard. Cerita bermula
saat penjaga Heloise, Fulbert, yang merupakan pendeta di Gereja Notre-Dame di
Paris memberi pekerjaan pada Peter untuk menjadi guru bagi Heloise.
Alih-alih menjalani peranan sebagai guru dan murid yang
disibukkan dengan aktiviti pembelajaran, keduanya tanpa disengaja terlibat dalam hubungan
terlarang. Pada akhirnya hubungan keduanya telah membuahkan pada kehamilan Heloise.
Fulbert sendiri awalnya juga tidak mengetahui apa yang terjadi di antara
Heloise dan Peter.
Yang terjadi setelahnya, Heloise dan Peter menikah secara
diam-diam. Namun, kerabat Heloise tidak senang dengan pernikahan tersebut
hingga Peter diserang secara fizikal telah diganggu dan dilontarkan batu oleh pengikut penjaganya yang
dendam.
Setelah insiden tersebut, Heloise dan Peter hidup terpisah.
Heloise menjadi biarawati di Argenteuil sementara Peter berkarier sebagai
pendeta di St.Dennis, Paris. Meski terpisah, keduanya tetap berkomunikasi melalui surat.
Surat-surat yang menjadi bantuan komunikasi antara Heloise dan Peter yang kemudian masih dikenang hingga saat ini. Pesan-pesan Heloise yang ditulisnya
untuk Peter juga masih kerap dikutip sebagai pesan cinta yang menginspirasi
banyak orang. Tak hanya itu, kisah keduanya juga dianggap sebagai salah satu
kisah cinta yang mengharukan sekaligus menjadi cerita kasih lagenda.
