BURNOUT: How dangerous could it be?

The term burnout is commonly used in the context of fatigue at work but the latest findings from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) reveal that symptoms can also occur to a person if unable to perform normal daily routines.

UKM Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Health Program Lecturer, Dr Shazli Ezzat Ghazali said, his party detected the symptoms of burnout through the negative effects of the environment experienced by students of institutions of higher learning (IPT). He said the special study was conducted on 159 respondents who were trapped on campus during the Movement Control Order (PKP) using tools developed according to the suitability of the situation.

"Studies show that students experience four characteristics that contribute to the symptoms such as pessimism (bad suspicion) towards residential colleges or institutions of higher learning, fatigue due to activities or tasks arranged, insufficient feelings and problems experienced during the PKP period. The results show that 37.6 percent of the 159 students who were trapped when PKP was detected to have symptoms of burnout."

Apart from that, he said, the results of the study from March to April on the respondents aged between 20 to 25 years revealed that the group of students had other psychological issues.

"Other effects experienced include mental health problems such as psychosomatic, anxiety, insonmia, social dysfunction and depression by 24 percent as well as loneliness (64 percent). Following the study, several interventions were conducted by researchers to overcome this psychological problem, including using technology in creating a process of socialization according to new norms."

"For example, creating a WhatsApp group to express feelings of stress, loneliness and fatigue due to the burnout process earlier. In addition, planning in creating activities that comply with the SOP is also developed to reduce the issue of silence such as gathering with a social distance of one meter during food distribution as well as the daily needs of students," he said.
